Are you interested in the history of the Brethren in Christ Church?  Are you interested in African history?  Do you want alternative chapel credit? 

If you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, then consider attending a lecture on Thursday by Wendy Urban Mead of Bard College.  The title of her lecture is “Being Brethren in Christ in a Time of Violence: Zimbabwe in the 1970s and 1980s.”  The lecture is sponsored by the History Department, the Biblical and Religious Studies Department, and the Sider Institute.  It will take place from 4-5pm on Thursday, January 12 in Boyer 131.

Dr. Anthony Grafton, outgoing president of the American Historical Association, on new directions in history.  A couple of snippets:

"The most Luddite person you can imagine" is how Anthony T. Grafton describes himself. But it’s in part thanks to Mr. Grafton, a professor of history at Princeton University, that the American Historical Association has finally put digital-humanities scholarship on its agenda.

I’m proudest of all the attention we’re giving to digital humanities in this annual meeting. We’ve really moved an order of magnitude into the digital world. That is a real accomplishment, mostly not mine, except for the [presidential] bully pulpit.”

Dr. Grafton will be our keynote speaker this year for the 2012 School of Humanities Symposium on Thursday Feb. 23, 8:00 PM.

This Thursday (1/12) the Departments of History and Biblical and Religious Studies and the Sider Institute at Messiah College are sponsoring a talk entitled "Being Brethren in Christ in a Time of Violence:  Zimbabwe in the 1970s and 1980s."  This lecture will be presented by Wendy Urban-Mead, a history professor at Bard College.  She is completing a book on the history of the BIC Church in Zimbabwe which will be published by Ohio University Press.  The talk will be held in Boyer 131 from 4:00-5:00.

Are you looking to build your resume and serve the local historical community?  Kevin Wagner, the Social Studies Program Chair at Carlisle High School and an adjunct instructor at Messiah is looking for students to serve as judges at the Local History Day at Carlisle High School on February 4.  Not only is this a great opportunity for service, but it will be a good way to fine tune your judging skills in preparation for the Regional History Day competition held later this Spring at Messiah.  Here is Kevin’s e-mail:

 I am still in need of a few more judges and Messiah students are always great to work with!  The date of our competition is Saturday, February 4, 2011.  We start with a judges meeting at 8 a.m. and then the actual judging takes place from 8:30-11:30 a.m.  We usually finish up by 12:30 p.m.  If any students are interested, they can contact me at wagnerk@carlisleschools.org and I will provide more details.  Thanks!
