Christina Thomas Wins Friends of Murray Library Research Grant

Congratulations to history major Christina Thomas for winning a Murray Library Research Grant to continue her research on the Flowers family.  Rachel Flowers was the first African American student to attend Messiah College, then known as Messiah Missionary and Bible Training School.  She was in attendance from 1916-1918.  She was followed at Messiah by her brother Vincent, a 1927 Messiah graduate.

The grant will allow Christina to travel to Mississippi to do research in the Mississippi State Archives in Jackson where the papers of Rachel’s younger sister, Hilda Flowers, are located.  You can learn more about what kinds of records she will be working with here.  I would also encourage you to read Christina’s blog: “Diary of a (Future) Historian.”
