The Messiah College History Department has been developing a great working relationship with Ye Olde Sulphur Spa Historical Society in York Springs, PA.  A lot of great things are happening at this small community museum.  In addition to the historic properties it manages, the society recently purchased a new building for its headquarters.  York Springs has a fascinating history.  It was the home of the famous York Sulphur Springs, a 19th-century sulphur hot springs that brought summer vacationers to York Springs from Baltimore and Philadelphia.  The York Sulphur Springs was a thriving vacation destination before train travel made the Atlantic beaches more accessible.  This is definitely a local story that needs to be told and the folks at the Historical Society are committed to telling it.  Our own Cathay Snyder has a leadership role at the society.

The society’s recent newsletter reflects our growing relationship with the good folks in York Springs.  You can read it here (click on “Latest YOSSHS Newsletter”).  Dr. Fea will be speaking at the society’s annual dinner meeting in March.  Cathay is using the newsletter to recruit judges for the upcoming regional History Day at Messiah.

And Sarah Kelley, a senior history major, served as the society’s archival intern during J-Term.   Here is a description of the work Sarah accomplished during her internship:

Sarah Kelley, a senior history major, spent Messiah’s January Term with us as an archival intern. With Sarah’s assistance, we have identified the location of manuscripts and artifacts in the archives and organized these materials in preparation for formal accessioning to our collection. Sarah created spreadsheets with the location information which we are currently using as a guide to finding manuscripts and artifacts in the archives. She also scanned slides from Clyde “Joe” Kennedy’s collection into photographs for use in an upcoming Society program as well as researched biographical information on several physicians of York Springs as we work to adding to our exhibit on area physicians and medicine.

Nice work, Sarah!

We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Ye Olde Sulphur Spa Historical Society.  Stay tuned for future internship possibilities.
